What to Expect in Class
In my Pottery Class, you’ll choose to work in hand-building or wheel throwing.
Hand-building techniques include pinching, rolling slabs, building with coils, using templates and molds. Students typically work toward creating a specific object—such as a cup, mug, plate, sculpture, or other form. You’re welcome to bring inspiration photos, and we’ll help determine what can be realistically completed within the class time. Having a few ideas in mind is always helpful!
Wheel throwing focuses on learning the potter’s wheel as a tool. First-time wheel students may or may not complete a finished piece, as the emphasis is on learning fundamentals and getting comfortable with the process. We’ll start with small forms like tiny pots, bowls, or cups, and students are encouraged to play and explore. Returning students can practice, refine, and build on their existing skills.
At the start of class, hand-building students usually begin by exploring molds, textures, and templates before moving into their projects. Wheel instruction follows shortly after, once hand-builders are settled.
Class Structure
- Classes are open to both new and returning students
- Regularly scheduled classes are limited to 5 students, allowing plenty of individual instruction and support at all skill levels
- Clean-up begins 15 minutes before the end of class
- Students are responsible for cleaning their wheel or workspace and all tools used
Project Schedule & Firing Process
- Weeks 1–2: Students will create their ceramic pieces.
- Week 3: Students will trim and finish their work. If trimming is not possible, students may create additional pieces during this time.
- Week 4: Students will glaze their work. Please plan accordingly, as we may need to stay late on glaze day to ensure all pieces are completed.
Glazing & Firing Details
- Students will select glazes to color their piece using dipping, pouring and brushing techniques. They will have access to all of the studio glazes.
- Glazing will be completed by the student after the work has been bisque fired to cone 06 (1828°F).
- Finished pieces will then undergo a final glaze firing to cone 6 (2232°F).
- Pottery is usually ready the following week. Your teacher will tell you pick up times based on firing schedules.
Please follow all studio procedures and timelines to ensure your work is fired and finished properly.
